Introduction to radio: blog tasks
Read Media Factsheet #224 Understanding the Industrial Context of Radio. This will give you a wider perspective on industry contexts for radio with particular focus on the industry theorists (Hesmondhalgh, Curran & Seaton, Livingstone & Lunt). Answer the following questions:
1) Read the first two pages of the factsheet. How does the Factsheet argue that radio still has cultural significance in the digital age?
The factsheet says radio is still important because lots of people still listen to it around the world. It is cheap, easy to access and helps local communities and new artists. In some countries without good internet access, radio is still the main way people get news and entertainment. The factsheet also says radio feels personal because presenters speak directly to listeners.
2) Look at the page 4 section on media theories. Briefly summarise the ideas of Curran and Seaton, Hesmondhalgh and Livingstone and Lunt.
Curran and Seaton say media ownership is controlled by a few big companies, which reduces diversity.Hesmondhalgh says media companies care more about profit than creativity.Livingstone and Lunt say media should be regulated to protect audiences and make media fairer.
3) What is the definition of public service broadcasting?
Public service broadcasting is broadcasting made to benefit the public instead of making profit. It aims to inform, educate and entertain audiences.
4) Look at the list of eight key principles for BBC Radio on page 6 of the factsheet. Choose the three you think are most significant and explain why.
Universal accessibility is important because everyone can listen to BBC Radio.
Attention to minorities is important because different groups and communities are represented.

5) What does the Factsheet suggest is the future of PSB radio? Do you agree?
The factsheet suggests PSB radio will need to adapt to digital platforms like BBC Sounds to survive. It may also change how it is funded in the future. I agree because younger audiences use streaming more, but radio is still useful for news, live programmes and community connectio
